Indy Minute - Your weekly source for independent wrestling news

The NXT/Indy Wrestling Minute, your favorite part of Ring Rust Radio, is back again with a ton of news and results from all around the indys. Even though my segment on the show got cut a little short this week, there’s always plenty more than get covered each episode so let’s get right into it!

  NXT TV
Titus O’Neil opened the show, saying it’s an honor and privilege for the NXT Universe to be in presence of a WWE Superstar like him. He came down to NXT because guys like Sami Zayn and Adrian Neville came to Raw, his show, and took up time from Superstars like him and now the show is “NXTitus” and Sami Zayn comes out to interrupt him. Sami calls Titus a “giant buffoon who couldn’t win a match to save his life” and references Titus getting beaten up by the bunny.
Adrian Neville comes out and says if anyone is going to defend NXT, it’s going to be him. Tyson Kidd then comes out, says Titus has a point and that the difference between Sami and Adrian is that Neville is NXT Champ. (I noticed a small PWG chant start here) William Regal came out to a huge reaction and says this is a “fighting show, not a whining show” (man, I wish they would take that advice for Raw). Regal then makes Zayn and Neville vs Tyson and Titus.
Emma makes her return to NXT and take on the Women’s Champion Charlotte. It’s really too bad Emma has fallen so far out of grace on the main roster because she’s got a lot of personality and is really talented in the ring too. But she made one mistake (and I insist that she just forgot to pay for that iPad case and didn’t try to steal it) and now she can’t even get a spot on Superstars. Charlotte defeated Emma with the Natural Selection.
Hideo Itami (or the wrestler formerly known as Kenta) makes his NXT in-ring debut against Justin Gabriel. Itami gets a huge reaction from the crowd. I actually really like his new gear, though I’ll always miss the brown and yellow Kenta gear. In an interview with Renee Young a few weeks ago, Itami said that “My style is kick” and in this match with Gabriel, he proved that.
This match was actually a decent back and forth and not just an Itami squash like I would’ve predicted. Itami did a great job working until his hard-hitting strikes took over the contest. He even hit a brutal kick to Gabriel’s face as he went for a leapfrog as well as a basement dropkick in the corner (like B-Boy’s face wash). His finisher seems to be a vicious top-rope doublestomp, which works great for him. After Itami picked up the win, the Ascension hit the ring and beat down Itami, laying him out with the Fall of Man. When they were champs, the crowd loved the Ascension but now that they’re beating up Itami, the crowd is booing them like crazy.
Baron Corbin squashed CJ Parker again (second time? Third time?). Drake is the ref. Corbin hits him with the Sister Abigail/Downward Spiral move called “End of Days.” Seems like they’re giving him a lone wolf, silent badass gimmick (especially since there’s a wolf on his ring entrance vest).
In a pre-taped segment, Enzo and Big Cass are in the gym and Carmella, from the hair place (Hair) where they got the hair removal cream, who says she got fired because of the two and says she’s here to fight. Seems like Enzo and Cass are getting a manager.
In the main event, Sami and Tyson start in the ring but Neville quickly tags himself in to the surprise of Sami. Zayn then tags himself back in and hits a standing moonsault on Tyson, trying to show up Neville and draws a “Better than Neville” chant and Neville doesn’t look amused. It’s clear that Sami and Adrian aren’t on the same page.
Titus and Tyson proceed to work over Sami for the majority of the match. When Neville makes his way back into the match, Sami involves himself to try and keep Titus from interfering as Neville looks to hit the Red Arrow on Tyson. The ref has to stop Sami which lets Titus push Adrian off the top, letting Tyson get his knees up and earn the pin. After the match, Sami and Adrian have words with each other and the friction between the two continues to build after the events of NXT Takeover.

  A few more NXT notes:
There were a few NXT releases last week – Kendall Skye and Troy McLain. Skye, a Diva, never appeared on TV and McLain may or may not have been on TV at some point (though I can’t recall).
Also, Wildkat Sports’ Bu Ku Dao has allegedly been signed to NXT. He had a big going away party at the most recent Wildkat show titled "Bu Ku Dao or Die."
There’s also a rumor that Prince Devitt’s name has been chosen for when he actually debuts – Finn Balor. Sounds kinda odd at first but I think it could work pretty well. Definitely not the worst name I’ve heard come out of NXT.
And a note about NXT Takeover, it appears that the design on Bull Dempsey’s trunks was actually the logo for the XFL team the Orlando Rage.

 Also, this:

Ring of Honor is hosting a TV taping in Wheeling, West Virginia on September 27 where reDRagon will defend the tag team titles against Jimmy Jacobs and Roderick Strong of the Decade. Also, Matt Sydal makes his return to ROH and will face AJ Styles.

If you don’t watch ROH TV you should check out the episode that aired last week where Kyle O’Reilly faced the IWGP Heavyweight champion AJ Styles and the Young Bucks took on the Briscoe Brothers. Both matches were incredible and you can see ROH TV each week on ROHwrestling.com.
And this week on ROH TV, The Kingdom (Adam Cole and Michael Bennett) will face The Addiction (Christopher Daniels and Frankie Kazarian) and Silas Young will meet Michael Elgin for the ROH World title. (Obviously this was filmed several weeks ago as Elgin has since lost the World title to Jay Briscoe and I think Young is out with an injury currently.)

Ring of Honor “Champions vs All Stars” on October 11 in Kalamazoo, Michigan
The ROH Champions will meet four of the top stars in the company in a huge 8-man tag match. Jay Briscoe (World), Jay Lethal (TV), reDRagon (tag team) will take on Mark Briscoe, ACH, Roderick Strong, and Adam Cole.
This huge match has several implications - Briscoe vs Briscoe; Adam Cole is a former World champ and Roderick Strong has a tag title shot with Jimmy Jacobs this weekend in Wheeling, WV on the “Reloaded” tour and if the Decade were to earn the straps, his spot on the All Star team would be up for grabs.

There were several upcoming ROH events announced recently:
-Survival of the Fittest will take place over two nights on Nov. 7-8 in Columbus and Toledo, Ohio
-Glory by Honor 13 will take place in San Antonio, Texas on Nov. 15
-ROH’s 13th Anniversary show will be March 1, 2015 as the company makes its debut in Las Vegas, Nevada

New Japan Pro Wrestling’s “Destruction” took place in Kobe, Japan on Sept. 21.
Results are:
-CHAOS (Alex Koslov, Rocky Romero and Tomohiro Ishii) def. Bullet Club (Matt Jackson, Nick Jackson and Yujiro Takahashi)
-Alex Shelley, Bushi and Maximo def. Suzukigun (El Desperado, Taichi and Taka Michinoku) via DQ

-Kazushi Sakuraba and Toru Yano def. Suzukigun (Minoru Suzuki and Takashi Iizuka)
-Ryusuke Taguchi def Kushida to become the new IWGP Jr Heavyweight champ
-Kota Ibushi and Tetsuya Naito def. Bullet Club (AJ Styles and Tama Tonga)
-Bullet Club (Karl Anderson and Doc Gallows) def. CHAOS (Kazuchika Okada and Yoshi-Hashi) to retain the IWGP Heavyweight tag team titles
  -Togi Makabe def Hirooki Goto
  -Hiroshi Tanahashi def Katsuyori Shibata
-Shinsuke Nakamura def Bad Luck Fale to become the new IWGP Intercontinental champion (to regain the IC title you could say)

--Though there was many problems with the stream (Meltz said he couldn’t watch most of it and UStream wouldn’t do anything about it; other said they ordered it but couldn’t watch; some couldn’t even order it) and it was said this would be the last NJPW show offered by UStream, those who watched it said that in the credits, it mentioned you’ll be able to get the next NJPW show, “King of Pro Wrestling,” on UStream so we’ll have to wait and see.

At King of Pro Wrestling, the card will be:
-AJ Styles vs Hiroshi Tanahashi
-Kazuchika Okada vs Tetsuya Naito
-Yoshi-Hashi and Shinsuke Nakamura vs Katsuyori Shibata and Hirooki Goto
-Tomohiro Ishii vs Yurjio Takahashi
-Ryusuke Taguchi vs El Desperado
-The Timesplitters (Alex Shelley and Kushida) vs Forever Hooligans (Alex Koslov and Rocky Romero) vs The Young Bucks (Matt and Nick Jackson)
-Kazushi Sakuraba and Toru Yano vs Takashi Iizuka and Minoru Suzuki
-Satoshi Kojima and Hiroyoshi Tenzan vs Davey Boy Smith Jr and Lance Archer
-Bushi vs Chase Owens
-Kota Ibushi, Tomoaki Honma, Yuji Nagata, and Togi Makabe vs. Bullet Club (Tama Tonga, Bad Luck Fale, Doc Gallows and “Machine Gun” Karl Anderson)

Results from Chikara’s King of Trios, which took place in Easton, PA over three big nights of action. The VOD replays are already online at www.smartmarkvideo.com if you want to check out what was said to be a great tournament with some stellar non-tournament action.

Night 1
-Team UK def. Bloc Party
-Gekido def. KE4PG (Knight Eye for the Pirate Guy) and Princess Kimber Lee
(Jigsaw wouldn’t fight Jolly Roger even after Shard and 17 try to force him to)
-Spirit Squad def. Odditorium
-Flood def. Spectral Envoy
(Deucalion makes an appearance with Delirious. Delirious was said to have attacked Mantis. Before this match, The Flood brought Lithuanian Snow Troll out to the ring on a leash.)
-Devastation Corporation (Max Smashmaster, Blaster McMassive and Flex Rumblecrunch) def. Team Extravaganza (Jervis Cottonbelly, Thunderkitty and Marion Fontaine)
-3Peck0 def. BDK Cubed
(After the match, Nokken attacks Ares and Cube is unmasked as Jakob Hammermeier. Jakob seems to be in control of the BDK now. Also, the last time we saw the Eye of Tyr, Dr. Cube controlled it which seems to suggest that Jakob and the BDK now control the artifact.)
- Golden Trio def. L.A.X.
-The Greenhorn Mafia (Kid Cyclone, Create-A-Wrestler and 3quinox) shows up and Hallowicked orders them to the back. (Hallowicked is the head trainer at the Chikara Wrestle Factory, which is why he is ordering the Greenhorn Mafia around)
-Arctic Rescue Ant takes out Worker Ant (assailANT?) with his snowboard but Worker is able to return and The Colony defeats Colony: Xtreme Force.

Cosby Sweater Dr. Cube is actually Jakob Hammermeier!
Night 2
-In the first Rey de Voladores qualifier - Rich Swann eliminates Chuckie T, Tigre Uno eliminates Swann and Shynron eliminates Tigre Uno to win the first qualifying match of the mini-tournament
-3Peck0 def. Gekido.
(Shard and 17 don't trust Jigsaw after KE4PG situation and won't tag him in. Shard and Jigsaw get into shoving match which leads to Shane Matthews tapping Shard with a Boston Crab. Quack comes out to try and recruit Jigsaw back to Chikara heroes and Jigs pushes him, says he doesn't need anyone.)
-In the Battle of the Bowties, Rockstar Spud makes Bryce Remsburg wear a bowtie too. Juan rips bowtie off Bryce and wins with a German suplex.
-Greenhorn Militia challenge Deucalion. Says they'll attack him from behind if necessary
-Devastation Corporation def. Team UK
-In the second Rey de Voladores qualifier - Sanada pins Christopher with his feet on the ropes, Amasis pins Fox and Sanada pins Amasis with mist then a superkick and will face Shynron to decide who is King of the High Flyers.
-Golden Trio def. Spirit Squad when Icarus taps Kenny with the Chikara Special
-“Smooth Sailing” Ashley Remington def. Yoshi Tatsu with a delayed German after Juan interfered and Tatsu kicked him in the head
-The Flood def. The Colony when Deucalion has Soldier Ant attack Worker Ant. Afterward, Hallowicked and Batiri attack the Flood. The Greenhorn Militia attacks Deucalion and unmask him, but Deucalion kills C.A.W. and 3quinox with the Choke Breaker. Kid Cyclone escapes and Hallowicked grieves for his students.

Deucalion looks just a freaky without the mask as he does with it.
Another shot of Deucalion without the mask. There was speculation he was a
former ROH student named Davey Andrews but that doesn't appear to be correct.

Night 3
-Golden Trio def. The Flood when Icarus taps Volgar with Chikara Special. After the match, Icarus freed the Snow Troll but Snow Troll low blows Icarus and the Flood lays out the Golden Trio. (Snow Troll under spell of Eye of Tyr?)
-Devastation Corp. def. 3Peck0. (3Peck0 painted like Dev. Corp.)

-Portal def. Team UK(Damien Peter Dunne)
-Wrecking Crew (Jaka and Oleg) def. Portal to win (Bakabella hits Ophidian with sack of coins after Barber got taken out)
-Submission Squad def. Gentleman's Club in Atomicos (Cibernetico?) tag (Chucky T, Drew Gulak, Orange Cassidy and Swamp Monster).
-Shynron def. Sanada to win the Rey de Voladores. Shynron gets misted but recovers to hit second rope 630.
-In the King of Trios finals, the Golden Trio faced the Devastation Corporation. Icarus kicks out of Death Blow but another to Dasher and Dev Corp win KoT.
-After the finals, the Flood celebrates and Jimmy Jacobs demands the Grand Championship be handed over to Eddie Kingston or he'll end Chikara for good. Icarus the belt is worthless if Chikara dies and hands it to Kingston. Kingston turns on the Flood and chases them from the ring and the heroes celebrate.

And the return of the Young Bucks!

Exclusive Ring Rust Radio interview with TNA star Robbie E on Bound for Glory in Japan, the Amazing Race and more

The Ring Rust Radio team is back with another big interview and this time the guys are talking with TNA star Robbie E! As TNA heads into Bound for Glory, its biggest show of the year, Donald Wood, Mike Chiari and Brandon Galvin get to talk with Robbie about Bound for Glory being held in Japan, his history with TNA, his upcoming appearance on the Amazing Race on CBS and much more!

You can read highlights from the interview below, listen to the interview on the YouTube player below, or visit this link to listen to the latest episode of Ring Rust Radio featuring this interview with Robbie E.

Ring Rust Radio: You and your girlfriend Brooke Adams will be competing on the 25th season of the Amazing Race. The show premieres Friday, Sept. 26 at 8 p.m. ET on CBS. What were some of the similarities and difference between wrestling and reality television and what should the fans expect from you in the competition?

Robbie E: When you think of me and when you think of Brooke, you think of two of the wildest and craziest people in wrestling. I think we are perfect for reality TV. We are the perfect two people to race around the world and do a whole bunch of crazy stuff. It is going to be a wild and exciting 12 weeks. You’re going to see Robbie E. do things you probably didn't think he would ever be willing to do. Let’s just say I don't like animals.

Ring Rust Radio: Having had the opportunity to travel the world as a professional wrestler, in what ways did that experience help yourself and Brooke when it came to having success on The Amazing Race?

Robbie E: I definitely think when you’re racing and you’re going to new places for a lot of people its outside of your comfort zone. I'm used to traveling for wrestling and being places I'm not familiar with so I think that will help. Also the race is kind of like expect the unexpected. There are so many different factors and things that can hurt you. There is really no way to properly prepare for it. Being an experienced traveler definitely doesn't hurt in this situation, but I don't know how much it will help.

Ring Rust Radio: TNA has undergone major changes over the last several months. With a move to a new night and turnover on the roster, what are your opinions on Impact Wrestling's future on Spike TV and beyond?

Robbie E: I think change is a good thing. It keeps things fresh and exciting. The new night is a shock to some people. Our ratings are already where they normally were.  Wrestling really hasn't been on Wednesday nights before. I think it’s a new setting, it’s ours, and we own it. As far as whether we end up staying on Spike TV or going somewhere else it doesn't really matter.  Our fan base is going to follow and TNA is here to stay.

Ring Rust Radio: TNA turned a lot of heads when it announced that Bound For Glory would be held in Japan this year. With that event now just a few weeks away, how do you feel TNA is going to benefit from having its biggest show of the year in Japan?

Robbie E: Change is good, something different is good. It is pretty rare and random for a wrestling P.P.V. to be held outside the U.S. especially somewhere like Japan. I think it builds excitement, it’s something different, and you don't know what to expect. I'm excited to be a part of it; everyone is excited to be a part of it. I think it will be fun as a fan to watch. I think it will be a whole new cool experience with everyone involved.

Ring Rust Radio: You have quietly amassed a very impressive championship record. As a former X Division champion, tag team champion and television champion, are there any moments that really stick out as the top highlights from your career thus far?

Robbie E: The records speak for themselves and the longevity speaks for itself. I've been here four years and wrestling is always constantly changing. I remember when I started in TNA; the locker room I was in about 95% of those guys are gone now. When you would have looked at it, they probably would have said Robbie E. would have been one of the early ones out. I'm still here and I'm not going anywhere. That proves right there that I deserve to be where I am at. Look at the gold bro, look at the records. I would say winning the tag titles for a second time at the One Night Only P.P.V., putting a beat down on Ronnie from Jersey Shore, and breaking my big VIP sign over my former bouncer. That was something funny I will never forget because it’s fun to break stuff over people’s heads.

Ring Rust Radio: Tag team wrestling has really taken center stage recently in TNA with Team 3D, The Hardys and The Wolves competing in a series of matches for the tag titles. As a tag team wrestler in your own right, what are your feelings on the current state of tag team wrestling in TNA?

Robbie E: I think it’s coming back and we have great wrestlers. Tag teams weren't just guys working together. They looked alike, thought a like, and they were a gelled unit. Tag team matches for a while were almost just two singles matches. They were just two guys thrown together and the art of tag team wrestling was gone.  I think we are definitely moving forward and getting it back to where it used to be. You just listed some of the greatest tag teams of all time and currently in pro-wrestling, we're on the right track.

Chikara's King of Trios across three days with huge names

This weekend, Chikara Pro is hosting its first huge event since returning last May – the King of Trios! The annual tournament showcases one of Chikara’s biggest strengths, its fast-paced, high-flying tag team action. Along with 16 big trios signed for this tournament, there are several exciting non-tournament matches along with a Rey de Voladores (King of the High Flyers) mini-tournament beginning on Night Two.

Since Chikara’s return, the heroes – led by Grand Champion Icarus and the Campeonatos de Parejas, The Throwbacks – have been battling The Flood for the future of the company. The Flood is a super group of former villains (the BDK, Dr. Cube, the Gekido) who have banded together with new villains (the Bloc Party, the Devastation Corporation, Colony Xtreme Force and Kizarny’s Odditorium) to destroy Chikara once and for all.

But Chikara has its heroes to oppose the villains and protect the company for the technicos and all the fans. Leading the charge is reformed villain Icarus, the current Grand Champion, and Campeonato de Parejas (tag champs) the Throwbacks (Dasher Hatfield and Mr. Touchdown) in the tournament itself as the Golden Trio. Other technicos in the tournament are The Colony (Fire Ant, Silver Ant and AssailAnt), 3Peck0 (3.0, Scott Parker, Shane Matthews and Archibald Peck), and the Spectral Envoy (Ultramantis Black, Hallowicked and Frightmare) will do their best to keep the Flood away from the tournament championship.

The announced tournament matches are:
Team UK vs The Bloc Party
KE4TPG (Jolly Roger, Lance Steel and Princess Kimber Lee) vs GEKIDO
The Flood vs Spectral Envoy
Team Extravaganza vs the Devastation Corporation
BDK vs 3Peck0
The Colony vs Colony Xtreme Force
Golden Trio vs LAX
Spirit Squad vs Kizarny’s Odditorium

My guesses as to first round advancements are – Team UK, GEKIDO, The Flood, Devastation Corporation, 3Peck0, Colony, Golden Trio and the Odditorium. This leaves both heroes and villains with four teams a piece in the second round. I figure at least one brought in team will advance and I can’t see Golden Trio losing in the first round and since the Bloc Party is awful (bring back the Baltic Siege!), I figure Team UK will be the team to advance.

But those tournament matches aren’t the only reason to attend King of Trios this year, as Night 2 offers some huge nontournament matches as well as a mini-tournament as the Rey de Voladores makes its return to Chikara! Rey de Voladores translates to “King of the High Flyers” and will feature two four-way elimination matches, which I’m assuming will lead to a one-on-one to decide a winner.

Also on Night Two will be several outside talents that were a big surprise to me as several TNA stars and a former WWE wrestler are booked. TNA stars Tigre Uno and Great Sanada will take part in the Rey de Voladores and in non-tournament matches, TNA’s Rockstar Spud will face Juan Francisco de Coronado and former WWE star Yoshi Tatsu will face “Smooth Sailing” Ashley Remington. (If Remington doesn’t enter to Christopher Cross’ “Sailing” or a Michael McDonald song they clearly have never seen the “Yacht Rock” series on YouTube.)

The first elimination match features Shynron vs Chuck Taylor vs Tigre Uno vs Rich Swann

The second elimination match features Orlando Christopher vs Great Sanada vs AR Fox vs Amasis

Also, on Night 3, there will be a 10-team tag team gauntlet match and the first teams announced at the Batiri and Oleg the Usurper and Jaka, representing the Devastation Corporation. I’d imagine a student team will be involved (Kid Cyclone and someone), a Submission Squad team, Los Ice Creams, the Orisian Portal (who I was surprised wasn’t in the trios tournament) and probably even a TNA team.

Since Chikara returned, there have been several interesting events that have occurred. While the Flood has been running rampant in Chikara, their leader/massive monster “Deucalion” has been killing off characters. So far, he’s killed Kobald, deviANT, Estonian Thunderfrog and Latvian Proud Oak with a Choke Breaker. Also, before Thunderfrog was killed, he used his magic hammer to vanquish BDK’s Tursas.

You can bet that Deucalion will show up at King of Trios and he’ll probably be killing someone off. I’d imagine he has to kill off someone big to really make an impact. So far, he’s been killing off smaller characters. Kobald, deviANT, Thunderfrog and Proud Oak are lesser tier characters but at King of Trios he needs to make a big impact. If I had to pick someone, I would say he should target Archibald Peck. Peck was integral in bringing Chikara back (during the “Ashes” video series) and has been an integral member of the Chikara roster for a long time now.

There’s also the matter of Soldier Ant and Delirious, who are under the control of the Flood. Many were speculating that they would return for tournament action and are conspicuous by their absence. My guess is that they will show up with Deucalion and if they don’t cost a technico team the team in the finals, they will definitely be attacking the winners.

King of Trios promises to be a huge event and should be a major milestone in the current storyline. Even if a technico team manages to win, Deucalion and the Flood will definitely be doing whatever they can to disrupt the festivities.

On another note, Jervis Cottonbelly and Juan Francisco de Coronado were interviewed by a local TV news station and it was pretty great to see the Ecuadorian Aristocrat and the World’s Sweetest Man on TV.
